Change Your Locks When You Move Homes

There are some times in your life that are somewhat to extremely stressful events. Getting married or divorced or starting a new job are very demanding and can send your blood pressure upwards, but the stress of moving home and the amount of information that you have to remember and retain while you are moving from one property or another can be very difficult, however organised you are.

When you move homes, it can be easy to overlook or forget to complete some of the tasks on your long lists. Where you can arrange the timing perfectly, you should have your locksmiths in Sydney change all of the locks and issue you with new keys the day you move into a new property.

Changing Your Locks

Whether you are purchasing or renting a property, it is important to change the locks as you begin your new life there. This is easy when you are in a property, but if you’re going to rent, you may need permission from the current owner, who will be your new landlord. Where you can work far enough ahead, you might include changing the locks on a rented property as part of the deal when taking on the new property from your landlord.

There might be a high number of people walking around your city with keys to your front door and this can apply equally to purchased or rented property. Although all of the keys are supposed to be provided to you when you complete the purchase or rental agreement, there are still a number of people who will have keys to your property and perhaps not even realise that, even by accident.

This does present a safety issue for you and your family and even worse, an insurance claim may fail if you have not completed all the actions you can to make sure that no one else can have a key to your property.

Looking at Statistics

The police have a range of statistics that will show that homes may well be broken into by individuals who knew the people who used to live in your property. They know the layout well and may even be a neighbour who held a spare key for the previous occupants.

Although it may be difficult to have your locksmiths change the keys and the locks on the day you move in, you should also consider installing deadbolt locks if they don’t currently exist. You may not have to replace an entire lock, because locksmiths can be very clever with only changing the key mechanism within some locks, which reduces your bill, and keeps you safely locked inside.

When you ask your locksmith to change keys and locks in your new property, you should ensure that they change every entrance to your property, making sure that you don’t forget about any basement entrances or side doors that will probably never be used, except by a potential thief.
